WordPress Glossary Plugin (CMTG) - Troubleshooting - Sorting Terms Alphabetically

Terms are displayed out of alphabetical order

Back to User Guide

If your glossary terms appear to be out of alphabetical order on the Glossary Index Page, it is probably because you have irrelevant characters in the term name, such as spaces and dashes.

Look to find any white-space in the beginning of term titles which are out of alphabetical order and seem to be misplaced. Such mistakes happen when copy-pasting terms, sometimes causing white-spaces to be added.

WordPress does not trim any characters from the title, and this is a default WP behavior, we are not able to override this flaw.

Settings

Options related to the Alphabetical Index can be found in the WordPress Glossary plugin settings. Navigate to Admin Dashboard → CM Tooltip Glossary → Settings → Glossary Index Page → Alphabetic Index.

Sorting Terms by Titles or Permalinks

Another reason for the glossary terms to be sorted out of alphabetical order can be permalinks. It can happen when you assign custom permalinks for glossary terms which are different from the term titles. To fix this issue, enable the option Use titles for sorting instead of pemalinks:

Synonyms Break Alphabetical Order

In case if the term synonyms break the alphabetical order, this issue can also be solved by enabling the option Use titles for sorting instead of permalinks, the same as in the previous case.
